THE HIGH ACHIEVER; Strong Year for Diver Josh

Article excerpt

TEESSIDE has produced a conveyor belt of talented junior sports stars - and Norton diver Josh Dowd firmly belongs in that category.

The 17-year-old Rio Olympics hopeful walked away with the Junior Sportsperson of the Year prize at last year's Evening Gazette Sports Awards after bursting on to the world scene with his springboard skills.

Now the race is on to follow in Josh's footsteps with the Gazette's 15th annual Sports Awards coming up fast on Thursday, October 25 at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough.

Junior Sportsperson of the Year will once again be one of five Prestige categories sponsored by Tees Active at the Gazette's big bash.

The winners this year will receive a pounds 500 cash prize, plus a hand-crafted trophy and a framed certificate.

And whoever takes the Junior Sportsperson of the Year honours this time will be a worthy winner on the back of Josh's 2011 victory.

The City of Leeds diver twisted and tumbled to sixth and 11th places as he reached two finals on his debut at the FINA Junior World Championships.

Those sparkling performances in Tucson, Arizona saw him finish as the second-highest ranked European diver.

He also wrapped up an outstanding season by placing fourth - missing out on a medal by a mere 0.10 points - and fifth at the Montreal CAMO competition in Canada.

Britain's 12-strong diving team at this summer's London Olympics was made up of five competitors from the City of Leeds club and Josh is now hoping to emulate his teammates as he targets the Brazil Games in four years.

He said: "Rio is my aim but I was shocked to win a Gazette sports award. I never expected it."

The closing date for entries in all categories is September 19.
