AS the Chronicle named Catherine Cookson, Sir Bobby Robson and Jackie Milburn as our top three greatest Geordies, we went into Newcastle to see if you agree and asked a group of people what they thought of our choices.

Eleanor Gregory, 60, retired, from Montagu Estate, Newcastle, said: "I love Catherine Cookson. Her books were true to life and just fabulous. They were made into films and she was known around the world.

"Bobby Robson was an inspiration to football but I think Catherine Cookson appealed to more people and she was more well-known."

Claire McDonald, 41, a retail worker from Elswick, Newcastle, said: "Everybody knows Catherine Cookson, so out of those three, I would say her. I have lived in the North East for more than 22 years and I know of her and Sir Bobby but I'm not so familiar with Jackie Milburn.

"If I was choosing, I would pick a comedian like Roy Chubby Brown. He's hilarious and a bit different."

Dannu Gregory, 38, a roofer from Elswick, said: "Most men would say Bobby Robson but I'd go with Catherine Cookson as I'm not at all into football. …
