Torres Tells Blues They'll Get the Best out of Him This Year

[bar] HEN Fernando Torres saw Didier Drogba back at Chelsea's training ground earlier this week he must have thought his worst fears had been realised.

To the Spain international's undoubted relief, Drogba was not making a shock return just a few months after joining Shanghai Shenhua but just making the most of a mid-season break in China to see his old team-mates.

Drogba's departure has finally given Torres, who has mostly struggled since joining in a British record [pounds sterling]50million transfer from Liverpool in January 2010, the chance to come out of his immense shadow.

Boosted by the arrival of flair this summer in the form of Eden Hazard, a player more suited to his style, Torres has already scored three goals in four games this term.

However, in Monaco tonight he will be given another test to see if he can emulate his former team-mate when Chelsea take on his old club Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup.

The last time Chelsea triumphed in Europe it was Drogba who stole all the headlines in the Champions League Final as he scored the equaliser against Bayern Munich before netting the winning penalty in the shoot-out.

Still, Torres admits he is already enjoying the chance to lead the line on a regular basis whatever happens in Monaco tonight.

When asked about replacing Drogba as the first-choice striker this season, he said: "I really like the responsibility. I have approached this season different to the way I approached the first one because it is important for me to have a great one and I'm sure I will.

"Talking about the two trophies we won last season [FA Cup and Champions League], it was brilliant. They were my first trophies with the club so it was an exceptional season for me.

"But I want to offer much more. It is my target and aim to give the best of me and make the staff and manager believe that I can be the player I was. …
