WORKERS, particularly apprentices, in the hospitality and construction industries are the biggest targets for workplace bullying, according to a Sunshine Coast counsellor.

Dianne Spencer, of Breaking Free, has seen the human consequence of the bullying first-hand.

aI am seeing more and more males in hospitality and construction,a Ms Spencer said.

aThe abuse apprentices cop is just phenomenal.

aAnd that is anything from peer pressure to do drugs or even homosexuality where the boss is gay and in a position of authority over young 16-year-old kids.

aDrugs are big in hospitality.

aI've noticed it's a cultural thing.

aIt's the in thing and you've got to be in the clique, otherwise you are on the outer and you don't make it through your apprenticeship.

aThere was also a report recently that showed the high rate of suicide among men in construction and it prompted me to put together a bullying program to break that cycle.a
