THE turning of the first sod for the new Ballina surf club yesterday meant one thing to the club's president: aIt's reala.

Kris Beavis and the rest of the members of Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore Surf Life Saving Club have been waiting anxiously for work to start on their new building.

It is being built at Lighthouse Beach by Bennett Construction and will cost about $5.8 million.

Funding has been provided by Ballina Shire Council ($3.2 million), the Federal Government ($2.3 million) and the surf club ($300,000).

aThis building has been front of mind for myself and the surf club,a Mr Beavis said.

aIt's been frustrating at times, but I think our patience has finally paid off.

The building was originally planned to be built further back from the beach, but the surf club lobbied to have it moved to the beachfront and it will now be built in a similar footprint to the original clubhouse, which was demolished in 2005. …
