Carlisle United 1 Preston North End 1 (Preston win 3-1 on penalties) CARLISLE United's love-hate relationship with the Johnstone's Paint Trophy hit another rocky patch as Preston built on their weekend win with a hard-fought victory courtesy of a spot kick shoot-out after a disappointing game for the home side.

The Lilywhites made nine changes to their starting line-up from the weekend but looked dangerous as they attacked in numbers.

Young keeper Mark Gillespie made his first start for the Cumbrians, bringing an end to a 146-match unbroken stretch of appearances for Adam Collin, who returned to the understudy role for the first time since 2009.

But it was a nightmare start for the stopper when he found himself picking the ball out of the back of the net with just four minutes on the clock.

Chris Beardsley was in the right place at the right time to sidefoot the ball into the bottom corner when David Amoo sent a wild volley across the face of goal.

Carlisle should have restored parity when they got forward with purpose with a lovely through ball from Jon-Paul McGovern. Loan striker Jake Jervis had just the keeper to beat but he clipped his attempted lob over the bar.

The Cumbrians camped in the Preston half before the break but quality was lacking in the final third as delivery after delivery either went too far or ended up in the keeper's hands.

And they were almost made to pay for their lack of meaningful approach play when the lively Amoo turned away from Murphy in midfield.

He beat two challenges on his way to the edge of the area, but Beardsley had his celebrations cut short as the offside flag went up at the same time as the ball hit the back of the net.

Carlisle looked brighter after the break and a whipped cross from Noble following more pressure found Robson unmarked. …
