Crash Rate Is out of Control; District Has Average of 15 a Month

POLICE are investigating why there has been a spate of serious truck crashes on Mackay roads.

Emergency service workers and police were called to yet another crash involving a truck on the Bruce Hwy, near Mt Ossa, early yesterday.

This time a driver was trapped in his vehicle for about three hours before being freed and airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital.

Although the images of the crash site and wreckage are shocking, the scene is all too familiar for emergency service workers.

On Monday they attended a truck crash at Murray Creek bridge, about 2km south of yesterday's incident.

Mackay traffic branch relieving officer-in-charge Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Edwards said this year there had been an average of 15 crashes involving trucks a month in the Mackay district.

However, in August there were 24 crashes Co three of which resulted in fatalities.

Acting Snr Sgt Edwards said police were investigating the cause of the increase as part of Operation Convoy, which was launched last month. …
