With her distinctive fringe and forthright opinions, she was a TV natural, so it's no wonder programme-makers have been quick to spirit her away from the Den and snap her up for other projects. In fact, we'd go as far as to say he hated them - so much so, he wrote a book called Daemonology, published in 1597, in which he described how witches could be identified. It proved so popular that people began carrying out his "tests" on women in an attempt to stamp out witchcraft and Satanism in England and Scotland. Although no accurate figures for the arrest and conviction of witches exist from the late 16th and 17th centuries, it's believed hundreds, maybe even thousands, could have been subjected to torture designed by the monarch, although he later distanced himself from the persecutions carried out in his name, claiming he never suggested witches should be sought. …
