MACKAY may well be known as a hub for the mining and minerals market but it's also going through a big boat boom.

The destination of choice for a variety of international ocean racing events, Mackay Harbour is also becoming increasingly popular as a port of entry to Australia.

Mackay Marina Village manager Ben Anderson said the marina precinct was proving more popular among boaties, and for good reason.

Proudly showing off a Volvo 60 ocean racer currently berthed at the marina, he said more big boat owners were choosing Mackay.

aOur proximity to the Whitsundays, plus having customs and quarantine here, is a big plus,a he said.

Mr Anderson said as a preferred port of entry, Mackay's competitors were Cairns, Bundaberg and Brisbane.

aWe are ahead of Cairns because we have the option of the Whitsundays and the reef,a he said.

aThat's a great drawcard for us.a

Mr Anderson said Mackay was increasingly being included on the itineraries of international yacht rallies. …
