PEOPLE never cease to amaze me.

This week, the Chronicle published an article about the coming Offshore Superboat race in Hervey Bay and the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) brigade came out in force.

aWhat about the noise?a

aWhat about the crowds?a

aWhat about the whales?a

Astonishingly, a vocal segment of the community believes a major sporting event coming to the Fraser Coast and using one of our top natural assets will be nothing but bad news for the region.

Most based their objections on environmental concerns, holding the belief that boats racing around a couple of hundred metres offshore from Pialba to Scarness would somehow affect the whale migration.

I'd hazard a guess that it is a long, long time since anyone saw a humpback breaching off Scarness Jetty.

These and other environmental concerns were voiced in spite of the fact that the whole point of the article was that the event had finally received environmental approval from Marine Services Queensland and the Department of Environment and Resource Management. …
