A CAMPAIGN to encourage smokers across Teesside to quit is being backed by a leading professor and the British Lung Foundation.

As reported, Fresh, which is campaigning for a smoke-free North-east, has relaunched its Every Breath campaign, after success last year saw a 17.9% increase in people setting quit smoking dates in the North-east, compared to 2.9% nationally.

The campaign highlights the dangers of smoking through the eyes of sufferers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

It is also backed by pop star Sting, as the campaign borrows lyrics from one of his best known hits, Every Breath You Take.

Professor Paul Corris, respiratory co-lead for NHS North East, said: "It is important for us to educate the public and demonstrate that smoking is directly linked to the development and progression of lung disease such as COPD, through campaigns like Every Breath.

"This campaign was a remarkable success story and is an inspirational piece of work; a fabulous campaign to have here on the doorstep in the North East. …
