Quake Rebuild Plan Unveiled

A FIVE-year plan to rebuild Christchurch's earthquake-damaged infrastructure at a cost of $2 billion was unveiled yesterday. The city's underground pipe network and its roads were badly damaged by intense shaking over the past two years.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee and city mayor Bob Parker revealed the plan which would aim to first fix the worst affected areas, such as the eastern suburbs.

The numbers were described as aastronomicala, with 1000km of roads to be rebuilt, hundreds of kilometres of water, waste and storm water networks to be addressed and 45 footbridges and 18 roadbridges to be repaired.

Mayor Parker said the plan gave acertainty for the futurea.

Recovery taskforce chairman Mark Ford said the rebuild was a huge task likely to cost more than $2.2b.

About $1.1 billion in funding has already been committed.

Friend shot

A DEVASTATED man who mistakenly shot his friend during a hunting trip near Rotorua yesterday was assisting police as they tried to reach the body.

The man, aged in his 30s, alerted police just before 8am following the accident in remote bush off Te Kopia Rd in the Waikete Valley, about 30km south of Rotorua.

Charge dropped

CANCER-stricken rugby player Kurtis Haiu had his drink-drive charge dropped.

Haiu's appearance was excused at the Auckland District Court where his lawyer Richard Earwaker said police were offering no evidence on the charge.

Judge David Wilson, QC, told the court that the charge was formally dismissed.

Outside court, Mr Earwaker said Haiu was very pleased that the charge had been dropped.
