Timber Industry Talks with Govt

ALL three tiers of government and stakeholders have to work together to safeguard the future of the timber industry.

That was the message that came out of a workshop at South Grafton Ex-Serviceman's Club on Thursday. About 50 timber industry representatives from between Kyogle and Kempsey met with 15 representatives from about a dozen federal and state agencies.

Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin said a whole range of issues were mentioned but broadly they revolved around getting costs down and more proactive marketing.

aWhen you look at it issue by issue, you can talk about some key ones,a Ms Saffin said.

aOn a state level the issues have been the cost of the resource itself going up as timber has to be acquired through Forestry NSW.a

She said that electricity costs, the high Australian dollar and the carbon tax had also impacted.
