Pupils Need to Take an Early Look at Their Future

FOR North Shore Academy's principal, careers advice needs to begin early.

Bill Jordon doesn't mean the old style careers advice that encouraged children to choose their jobs as they neared the end of their school careers.

But a modern approach that allows pupils to learn about themselves, what they like, what they are good at and then encourages them to think about their future and be flexible with their aims and the possibilities that are out there for them. He said: "It's strategic thinking - even young people can do that. It's a decision making process and we need to make them aware of who they are to be able to make those decisions."

Mr Jordon begins career advice in Year 8 with teenagers before they begin to choose their subjects the following year.

"We want them to think about their abilities, their aptitudes, whether they want to go on to further education or would rather choose an apprenticeship," he said.

"I hope to see North Shore Academy working with local businesses and national businesses, not just with career days, but to come in and mentor young people to ensure they have the best possible careers advice. …
