Teesside can make a multi-billion pound CCS pipeline a reality.

Around 40 senior industrialists and academics took Teesside's case for a CCS network to Westminster last week when they briefed MPs on the emerging technology.

Teesside is one of the frontrunners for a pounds 1bn Government competition to speed up the commercialisation of CCS in the UK.

If a Teesside project, which is already being backed by a high-level consortium of big name companies, goes ahead it will act as a "magnet" for new industry.

Stan Higgins, chief executive of NEPIC (North East Process Industry Cluster), said it was rare to get so many senior names from industry together at once.

"There was about 20 people from Parliament and 40 industrialists," he said.

"We had a really good debate about what CCS meant to the economy of Teesside.

"Both parties learned about the issues and technicalities.

"People went away with an appreciation that Teesside can do this - and do it quickly.

"CCS would reduce the carbon that all consumers are effectively using, from the steel and plastic used in our cars to British farming. …
