Fantasy Football; Take a Chance on QB Locker

Article excerpt

Byline: Justin Barney and Hays Carlyon

Start Tom Brady. Bench Mark Sanchez. Gee, thanks. Times-Union reporters Justin Barney and Hays Carlyon go beyond the obvious to provide fantasy football trends before they unfold.

THREE TO START

QB JAKE LOCKER, TITANS

HC: Garbage stats count too. I think New England will build a lead early and Locker will throw it a bunch. That's good news since the Patriots had the second-worst defense in the NFL last season. I'd start Locker over Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco and Josh Freeman this week.

JB: Two words for you: Chad Henne. Now the Jaguars backup, Henne passed for 416 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed, yes, rushed, for 59 yards and a score in the opener against the Patriots in 2011. In fantasy numbers, that was 35.5 points. I think Locker has potential to have a 25-point game, maybe more.

RB RASHAD JENNINGS, JAGS

HC: Even if Maurice Jones-Drew is ready for this game, I think he'll be punished with a limited role. I expect Jennings to get at least 20 touches against a solid, but not good Minnesota run defense. I'd play Jennings over Trent Richardson, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Shonn Greene.

JB: I'm not hitching the fantasy wagon to Jennings. Jones-Drew is going to get his carries this week and he's a bigger threat than Jennings to turn in a big fantasy game, even as a third-down back. If you want more than an eight- to 11-point fantasy contribution, better to look elsewhere.

WR TITUS YOUNG, LIONS

HC: Young capped his rookie season catching four touchdowns over his last four games. He also caught at least four passes in those contests. With Calvin Johnson getting doubled consistently, Young will feast on single coverage, especially this week against the Rams. He's a top-20 play this week.

JB: Johnson is so spectacular that he's going to create a 1,200-yard monster alongside of him. …
