MOTORSPORT: It was supposed to be third time lucky for Will Power.

After having the IndyCar title snatched from his grasp twice, the Toowoomba driver went into yesterday's final race of the season at the Auto Club Speedway oval track in Fontana, California, with a 17-point lead over American Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Both drivers started well back on the grid after copping 10-position penalties in qualifying, and were racing side-by-side on lap 55 when tragedy struck for the Australian.

Racing low on the track, Power suddenly caught a seam in the bitumen, the car spinning in a plume of smoke before smashing into the wall.

The incident left Hunter-Reay in 12th place, and he only had to move up to sixth by the finish to take the championship.

But Power and his team had one more roll of the dice.

The car was taken from the track and his Team Penske mechanics worked feverishly to get it back into driveable condition. …
