THE new Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry president has rejected criticism over him not living in the area, saying he has strong ties with Caloundra.

Michael Shadforth, who runs a Maroochydore business, was elected last week.

The chamber has been headed up by Caloundra-based businesspeople for more than 30 years.

A concerned business owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said the election came with the strong backing of proxy votes. A proxy vote is cast by a person on behalf of another not at a meeting.

The business owner said the proxy votes at the chamber elections on September 10 were in favour of Mr Shadforth.

aAll the members I spoke with indicated that they handed over their proxy vote when asked without any real explanation of what it was going to be used for,a he said.

aEveryone I spoke with was genuinely opposed to the idea that their vote was going to be used to allow a non-Caloundra based business to take over the chamber. …
