Angry Birds in Swoop Season; Magpies Act Territorial as Breeding Season Nears

CYCLISTS, runners and casual strollers are urged to keep their wits about them as the coming months herald angry birds season.

Magpie C[pounds sterling]swoopC[yen] attacks are increasingly common in Rockhampton about this time of the year with a number of areas reported as hot spots for the territorial birds.

The Morning Bulletin spoke with representative from various Rockhampton clubs and wildlife organisations, who have reported swoop attacks in Canoona Rd and other areas across the Rockhampton region.

Swoop areas around the region mentioned by local authorities include: Joyce Harding Park, Stanley St, Penlington St and Berserker St (between North Rockhampton High School and the Frenchville Sports Club).

Capricornia Wildlife Welfare Association president Gail Matthews said the worst course of action in an attack was to retaliate.

She said cyclists and children were among the most commonly attacked. …
