ALTHOUGH Pam Rumble and Brian Hedges, of Rockhampton lived just around the corner from each other as children, it wasn't until years later they finally met.

At the age of 13, Pam's family moved to Longreach to live.

It wasn't until the Rumble family returned to Rockhampton, when Pam was 19, that a cousin introduced her to Brian at a Railway Recreation Hall dance.

As a young man, Brian joined Queensland Rail and worked his way up through the ranks to fireman and driver, a job that took him all over central and western Queensland.

Shortly after the couple were married in St Joseph's Cathedral, Rockhampton on September 27, 1952, Brian was transferred to Cloncurry.

Due to a shortage of rental accommodation at Cloncurry, Pam had to wait until someone went on holiday before she could find a place to stay to spend time with Brian.

By the time Brian was transferred to Emerald, both he and Pam were tired of their long periods of separation. …
