Rattler Faces Testing Times; Gympie's Old Friend Needs Help in Return

IT attracts up to $2 million a year to the Gympie region, carries up to 33,000 tourists and has helped the city and its region through some of our most trying times.

But now, it seems the Mary Valley Heritage Rail needs our help in return.

MVHR officials yesterday were keen to stress the Rattler's indispensable role in keeping Gympie above water at flood times and keeping the Mary Valley's economy afloat during the financially dry times that followed the Traveston Crossing dam proposal.

But the floods it helped us deal with earlier this year and the year before may now have claimed their revenge.

Described as atwo years of adverse conditionsa, floods and this year's extended wet season had stolen many of the benefits from a tourist season, already suffering from an extended cyclical downturn.

Rattler officials told supporters and volunteers this week that the service needed their ideas, energy and word-of-mouth promotion to get the service back on track. …
