FOOTBALL: Socceroos coach Holger Osieck has implored his ageing senior players to be more accountable in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Iraq in Doha on October 17.

The Socceroos were lacklustre last month in their last qualifier, which they lost 2-1 to minnow Jordan.

After that game, Socceroos legend Robbie Slater questioned coach Holger Osieck decision to play a lead-up match just days before the Jordan clash, given the average age of the squad was 31.

When asked yesterday whether his older players could do more, both on and off the pitch, Osieck replied: C[pounds sterling]Of course. It's not enough to enter the pitch and do some stuff and then after the final whistle you are relieved of your duties.C[yen]

Slater's criticism appears to have had the desired effect, with Osieck cancelling a warm-up against the United Arab Emirates before the Iraq clash.
