DANGEROUS surf has been forecast for Northern Rivers beaches today.

With southerly off-shore swells of 2-4 m predicted, maximum wave heights could reach 8m, according to Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Julie Evans.

However, the hazardous conditions are set to begin easing from late morning.

Winds will also begin to ease as a low, which has been tracking northward along the east coast, begins to swing out to the east.

The low system brought a cold snap to the Northern Tablelands with unseasonal snow falling in Guyra and on Mt Mackenzie near Tenterfield.

Yesterday, the same system brought heavy rain and damaging winds to Sydney and snow to the Blue Mountains.

The changing conditions in the Northern Rivers have been welcomed by the Rural Fire Service.

Rainfall and cooler temperatures in recent days have assisted fire fighters to bring four Northern Rivers fires under control, but not before burning out an area of 12,032ha. …
