ROCKHAMPTON based writers and artists will want to hear what advice writer Lisa Lang has to offer during her month long stay in the region.

But the Melbourne based author will be just as interested to hear what they have to say as research for her next novel, based on creativity.

Lisa, aged 37, said it dawned on her about 10 years ago that she should follow the path to writing.

She studied an arts degree, went back to do Honours in Professional Writing and then went on to do her Masters while writing a novel.

C[pounds sterling]I didn't finish my Masters but I finished the novel,C[yen] Lisa laughed.

Lisa had written short stories in the past, and also wrote a small non-fiction book on the same character featured in her award-winning book Utopian Man.

Utopian Man is based on the true story of Edward Cole, described by Lisa as being amazingly rich and colourful, but forgotten.

C[pounds sterling]I felt a real sense of responsibility to the man and his life and the truth.

Lisa described Utopia Man as an uplifting story of a man who does good and she was flattered that people said the book made them want to be a better person.

C[pounds sterling]I was trying to balance historical information with something human and intimate.C[yen]

Researching the book, Lisa not only looked online but went through historical archives at the state library, including a box of Mr Cole's papers, photographs and diaries, which included treasures such as a ticket to a Turkish bath house.

C[pounds sterling]Now and then one little object would stand out.C[yen]

Lisa's book, while still in manuscript form, was a co-winner of the 2009 Australian/Vogel Literary Award, and its publication was part of the prize.

Utopian Man went on to win the Western Australian Premier's People's Choice Award. …
