THE connections of British import Gatewood will keep their fingers crossed that yesterday's Geelong Cup victory is enough to earn a place in the Melbourne Cup.

Ridden by brilliant distance jockey Glen Boss, Gatewood sat outside at the pedestrian speed posted by outsider Back in Black before sprinting home the last 600m in an astonishing 32.09secs to win from Chateau Margaux and French galloper Brigantin.

So slow did the field go for the first 1800m the overall time was 10 seconds outside the track record.

Gatewood was 41st in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup prior to the race, and would need a penalty of at least 1.5kg to be assured of a start at Flemington on Tuesday week.

Handicapper Greg Carpenter will decide on a penalty for the five-year-old this morning.
