VICKI and Rob Howard believe good things come to those who wait.

The Mooloolah Valley couple tried to conceive a second child for seven years before little Luke was born on March 2.

His birth puts Vicki, 42, in a growing band of Australian women having babies after 40.

In the 10 years to last year, the number of babies born to women over 40 climbed by 80% from 7100 to 12,800.

Although Vicki and Rob were still in their 30s when they began trying for a sibling for their daughter, Amy, now 7, having a baby in their 40s did not faze them.

aBy last year, we'd decided right, if it doesn't happen, so be it, but then he decided, a[approximately]Hey, I'm around',a Vicki said.

Vicki had a trouble-free pregnancy, with just a little morning sickness, just as she had with Amy.

Looking after the two kids on her own when Rob sometimes worked away, Vicki said motherhood in her 40s did not seem any more taxing than in her 30s.
