It's Hats off to a New Look

IT'S not often that the passing of a hat receives such press, but this isn't just any old hat.

In the aftermath of the Lockyer Valley floods last year, a particular tattered old hat became as famous as its wearer, Lockyer farmer Derek Schultz (pictured right).

The hat a and Derek a were filmed and photographed with royalty, the Australian Prime Minister, Queensland Premier, and an assortment of mayors, politicians, news celebrities and dignitaries from across the region.

That tattered hat became something of a crest for Derek, and his mates often ribbed him about getting a new hat that was more in keeping with his newfound status.

Of course, he would have none of it and the tattered hat remained close to him.

In the lead up to an interstate trip for a sporting event, Derek asked his mates if he should take the hat along.

Just like Clark Kent without his glasses, the mates were worried people would recognise Derek with his hat and seeing as they preferred to remain anonymous on the trip south, the inclusion of the hat was forbidden.

Upon his return home, Derek had sought out his tattered friend only to find it had been thrown out with the household rubbish never to be seen again.

In future, when the Prime Minister or royalty come calling to the Lockyer, Derek might just have to comb his hair.

Tough love

MEMBER of a group enjoying an after-work beverage at an inner-city inn this week received a text message advising him he had won a $1 million payout from an African-based lottery.

aWow, $1 million,a he smirked.

aAll I have to do is send a return text with my bank details and the money will be put straight into my bank account,a he told mates.

While some other members of group jokingly encouraged our man to send his bank details to the aAfrican Lottoa authorities, suggesting aWhat have you got to lose? …
