From Ref to President; Whistle-Blower Steps Up to Become Head of the FNC Zone

AFTER refereeing more than 600 Far North Coast Rugby Union games, Graham Cook is now president of the zone.

Cook was elected president at the FNC annual meeting at the Lismore Workers Club on Sunday.

He takes over from Michael Claes who spent one year in the job and opted not to run again.

Cook reached a milestone this year when he refereed his 300th first grade game.

aI'd never thought much about it before but I've got some ideas I think can improve our rugby and give us a higher profile,a Cook said.

aI think it's an exciting time for rugby in the area and we have the potential to go to another level.a

Cook won't be completely lost in the referee ranks and hopes to officiate the occasional game in 2013.

However he plans to spend the bulk of his time attending games at different venues on weekends.

It will be a big change for Cook who will step out of his comfort zone after 24 years refereeing in the FNC competition. …
