PC's Role in Beach Rescue Is Probed by Force

AN INVESTIGATION is under way into the circumstances surrounding the rescue of a child from the sea which led to a police bravery award.

Cleveland Police has confirmed it is looking into the incident which led to PC Emma Bedford being put forward for a Police Federation Bravery Award.

PC Bedford, 29, had been due to take part in the award ceremony in London earlier this month but did not attend after questions were raised over her role in the beach drama.

It is understood that allegations have been made that the officer's role in the rescue was less than reported.

PC Bedford was nominated for the honour after her part in the July 2011 rescue of Harry Watson, then 11, struggling in rough seas on a body board at Skinningrove.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "Allegations have been made about the circumstances of the incident that we are currently looking into. Until the matter has been resolved it is not appropriate for the officer to attend."
