FAMILIES will pack into rugby clubs, sports fields and outdoor venues this evening to see skies filled with fire.

But is the yearly event a time for Guy building and family get-togethers or a simply chance to watch thousands of pounds go up in smoke? Lucy Douglas, 19, a student from Newcastle is disappointed she'll be missing this year's display down at the Quayside. She said: "I really enjoy Bonfire Night It's something I used to go to with my family as a kid. I'd have been going but can't as I'm at a gig."

However shop manager Richard Hudson, 42, from Newcastle, will be there.

He said: "I try and go every year. So much money is spent on the fireworks and that is what I go for.

"In the past we've gone down the display in your back garden route but nowadays I'd rather go to a large display. …
