RACING: Leviathian owner John Singleton was more joyous at Flemington yesterday than he'd been for a while after his filly Dear Demi prevailed in the $1 million Crown Oaks.

Singleton was very disappointed after his champion mare More Joyous finished well back in the $3 million Cox Plate 12 days earlier, and then watched Dear Demi finish a luckless fourth in the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

But this time around he was all smiles as veteran jockey Jim Cassidy, who turns 50 in January, brought the filly with a well-timed run to beat favourite Zydeco with Summerbliss third.

The victory was particularly sweet for trainer Clarry Connors who said the Dehere filly had enjoyed no luck in her recent starts.

aShe has been in all the big races and she's had no luck in her last four starts, but she keeps trying,a Conners said. aShe's got a heart as big as anything.

aThe timing was perfect in her work. Everything was right and this morning she was pig-rooting coming off the track and the boys there said she was ready. …
