Tianni Makes Big Splash; Teen Caps off Great Year with Selection in Australian Team for Youth Olympic Festival

SWIMMING: Caloundra teenager Tianni Gilmour has booked a berth at the Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney next year but her coach says she has already shown maturity beyond her years.

The 16-year-old Matthew Flinders Anglican College student will represent Australia in the 400m and 200m individual medley at the event which will attract competitors from 30 countries.

She earned her spot on the team after putting in a performance which belied her young age, at the Australian Short Course Championships.

Competing in the open age division, the Pelican Waters Swim Club athlete finished second in the 400m IM, earning her first green and gold team tracksuit. Her coach John Wallace said she had come along in leaps and bounds over the past year.

He said she had flourished since making the step up into open competition at the Australian Swimming Championships in March.

A month later she put in an eye-catching performance at the Australian Age Championships where she won three silver Co in the 200m backstroke, 200m and 400m IM Co and two bronze Co in the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke. …
