A SHAKE-UP of NHS Direct could see jobs lost at Stockton's University Hospital of North Tees, a union claims.

The Royal College of Nurses (RCN) Northern Region says proposals to replace the medical advice service could see both of the North-east's NHS Direct sites - at Stockton and Longbenton, Newcastle - closed down in 2013.

They would be replaced, the RCN says, with "inferior" call centres as the non-emergency number 111 is phased in.

The RCN also says the number of substantive staff employed by NHS Direct has been halved at both North-east sites compared 2010 "as management get ready for winding up the service".

In November 2010, the RCN says, about 29 staff were employed at the Stockton service compared to 13 now.

Glenn Turp, RCN northern regional director, said the 111 service will be a "pale shadow of what NHS Direct used to be" and told of the union's concern that "the ongoing future of both of the North East's NHS Direct sites is at risk". …
