THE home of a wealthy Russian couple in the street known as "Billionaires' Row" has been gutted in a fire.

The [pounds sterling]2.8 million property, owned by Iouri and Natalia Chliaifchtein, was almost completely destroyed after the roof caved in as 40 firemen spent two hours bringing the blaze under control.

Only one member of the family was inside the house in The Bishops Avenue, East Finchley, when the fire started at 4.30am yesterday. It is understood that it broke out on the first floor of the six-bedroom property.

Last night, a neighbour who lives opposite, said the fire was "like a scene from a disaster movie".

"There was smoke billowing everywhere, even over the Tube station," he said. "There were eight fire engines lined up along the road and the whole street was cordoned off." Another neighbour described the family, who are understood to have lived at the house for about 10 years, as "almost reclusive". …
