You've just released your debut solo album a for those who were fans of your work with The Snake Oil Merchants is there a big change in your sound?

There certainly is a noticeable change. But I think you can still identify elements that were always there. At the end of the day I'm still the main songwriter, as I was in the Snake Oil Merchants. The key difference is that in TSOM, we sat and arranged the songs as a group. This time around the songs have come first and I have formed the band around what I want the songs to sound like. This record sounds a lot more ... like me.

Tell us about your musical educationa[degrees]

I grew up around a lot of different types of music. From rock'n'roll to jazz. My grandparents really love jazz. And I was fortunate enough to absorb that through their musical taste.

But for me, a lot of it is the blues. …
