Appeal to Help Workers; Businesses Asked to Consider Hiring Affected Staff

MACKAY Mayor Deirdre Comerford has called on Mackay businesses planning to employ new staff over the busy Christmas period to consider hiring those who have lost their jobs following the Greenfields Shopping Centre fire.

The Daily Mercury reported yesterday that ToysRUs Mackay is likely to shed 10 casual staff as a result of the fire on Saturday.

C[pounds sterling]If anyone is out there looking for experienced staff in the lead-up to Christmas, I would urge them to think first about those who lost their job in the fire,C[yen] Cr Comerford said.

C[pounds sterling]People have been very good; these are experienced staff, let's not forget, and it is coming into the busiest trading time of Christmas.

C[pounds sterling]I had a meeting ... with representatives of ToysRUs ... and I was impressed with their sense of wanting to be there for their workers and their plans, how they're going to deal with things in the short, medium and long term. …
