THE transformation of a town moor is complete after a deluge during the Hoppings funfair turned the ground into a quagmire.

Newcastle's popular annual event was delayed in June after downpours turned the area into a field of mud and caused around PS30,000 worth of damage.

Described as "the worst Hoppings ever" by ride owners, major contingency plans got under way before the fair started with people working around the clock to make improvements to the site.

The funfair attracts thousands to the city every year and is the biggest event of its kind in Europe.

After a week of thrill-seekers trampling through the fields, the state of the site worsened and eventually left it in need of a complete makeover.

It has left landowners, the Freemen of Newcastle, out of pocket as the maintenance budget had to absorb the costs of repairs.

The work follows repairs after a similar torrential downpour in 2007.

Engineers were called in to scoop out mud and slurry and landscapers have now re-seeded the entire site. …
