American Rockers Playing to a Whole New Crowd

WHILE Daughtry is one of the biggest names in US arena rock, the band is yet to break the UK - but a tour bringing them to Newcastle tomorrow, where they're supporting good friends Nickelback, could turn the tide.

The spawn of reality television's formative years and a multi-million selling corporate rock behemoth, the band have it all back home in America: a hit-laden back catalogue, frenzied fans in every major city and a profile worthy of primetime talk shows and tabloid gossip columns alike.

Yet frontman Chris Daughtry, the edgier face of American Idol Season Five, could stroll down Northumberland Street ahead of tomorrow night's show at Metro Radio Arena without a hint of recognition.

It's a situation he's determined to change.

"I don't believe I've ever set foot in Newcastle before," admitted the singer and rhythm guitarist.

"I know this sounds so typically American but I've never been outside London in the UK. That's why I'm so excited about this tour."

The tour in question sees Daughtry opening up for long-time touring buddies and global rock giants Nickelback. It's an invaluable showcase for Chris and his colleagues.

"This is our third run with Nickelback," he added. "We did their last European tour supporting the Dark Horse record and we toured the States with them on the All The Right Reasons shows.

"It's a great way of exposing their fans to our music and it's very generous of Nickelback to keep inviting us back! We think it's a great fit for both bands."

Daughtry the band look and sound perfect for the UK's soft rock market. Daughtry the man insists they are.

"We're keeping our fingers crossed that this tour will finally persuade the people of the UK to get behind Daughtry," said Chris. "Being out on the road with Nickelback should spark some real interest and we're hoping it will provide us with the platform to come back and play our own shows one day.

"We've been wanting to play over here for a long, long time. …
