SWIMMERS from Middlesbrough SC continued their fine start to the season with a successful weekend at the City of Sunderland ASC Firecracker Meet.

Competing at the Aquatics Centre in the city, club members notched up an impressive total of 115 personal best times (PBs), 49 medals and overall third place.

The opening session, which was held on the Friday evening, gave the local swimmers the opportunity to open their accounts in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events and they didn't disappoint, turning in a series of fine swims that earned gold medals in both events.

Aimee Willmott and Danielle Lowe took gold and silver in the 800m race alongside Jack Baister and Lewis Plaice collecting gold and Jamie Garbutt bronze in the 1500m.

During the Saturday and Sunday sessions, 17-year-old Gavin Haggerwood had an outstanding weekend on his way to the Top Boy accolade, claiming six gold medals across the 100, 200 and 400m freestyle, 200 and 400m individual medley (IM) and 50m butterfly.

He also claimed a bronze in the 100m backstroke and four PBs, whilst Lewis Plaice added to his distance triumph with three silver medals in the 400m freestyle, 50 and 200m backstroke, bronze in the 200m freestyle and a dozen PBs.

Jack Baister added silver in the 400m freestyle and four PBs to his tally, with Daniel Andrews and Logan Darby, both 14, contributing to the medal and PB count.

Daniel took silver and bronze in the 200m and 400m freestyle respectively and Logan swam to gold in the 200m butterfly and 400m IM as well as bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

Thirteen-year-old Daniel Wood and Scott Jenkinson marked their progress with PBs in each of their swims, with Daniel taking a bronze in the 50m butterfly and Scott bronze in the 50m backstroke.

Aimee Willmott and Danielle Lowe put on an awesome display that left their rivals trailing in their wakes with Aimee chalking up gold in the 100m backstroke and 400m IM to go with a pair of silvers in the 200m butterfly and 200m IM. …
