THE equipment is in and the doors of the new Mackay Base Hospital Emergency Department (ED) will open at 7.30 this morning.

However, medical staff are asking people to think twice before racing through the doors.

Clinical Services executive district director Dr David Farlow said people should not head to the ED unless they were dealing with an emergency.

C[pounds sterling]Please see your GP for non-urgent care,C[yen] Dr Farlow said.

C[pounds sterling]We will continue critical care for patients but we do encourage people to seek alternative care where possible.

C[pounds sterling]Relocating a critical care department such as Emergency is a big task and it is important we focus our attention on our sickest patients,C[yen] he said.

People should also call 000 rather than trying to drive themselves to hospital.

The new emergency department is on the ground floor of the main clinical building. …
