Police Hold Seven in Gun Probe; Firearms Team Called Out

SEVEN people are being quizzed by police in connection with inquiries involving a gun, the Chronicle has learned.

Five men and two women were taken into police custody as officers carried out an investigation into a disturbance in Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle.

Police descended on the estate shortly after 9.30pm on Sunday after a call was made saying a group of men were in a car in Hedgehope Road with a gun.

When specialist firearms officers went to the estate, the car was found in nearby Langleeford Road.

A house there was searched and four men - aged 24, 39, 40 and 42 - were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

Police later went to another address, in Ewbank Avenue, Fenham, carried out a search and arrested a 48-year-old man.

Two women - aged 21 and 42 - have also been arrested as part of the investigation.

However, as yet no weapons have been recovered.

Yesterday, residents in Hedgehope Road said they hadn't heard anything on Sunday night. …
