Squad's Dun the Business; City's Swimmers Book Place in Regional Final

CITY of Newcastle Swimming Club have booked their place in the North East Regional A Final of the National Arena League at Leeds on December 8. They splashed their way to victory in the North Division's second round at Dunston.

This season marks City of Newcastle's return to the National League after a number of years' absence.

The competition features a series of regional rounds culminating in the national final at Cardiff in April next year. S

In the regional final, Newcastle will face opposition from City of Leeds, City of Sheffield and other top clubs from across the north.

The first round was held at Sunderland in October and Newcastle snatched a six-point victory at the last moment after trailing on points for most of the competition.

The re-match at Dunston pool was hosted by Gateshead and Whickham ASC - and City of Newcastle took victory in 10 of the opening 12 races.

For the swimmers in the 11 and under age group there were outstanding wins for the boys, who had a clean sweep, James Morris and Christian Ubanan doubling up in the individual events and then being joined in the winning freestyle relay by Adam Hastings and William Dixon.

Thomas Gray swam the backstroke leg in the medley relay. The girls narrowly missed out on a clean sweep, Annalea Davison, Rebecca Dobbins and Emily Large winning their individual events.

Lowri Waugh was narrowly squeezed into second place but joined Davison, Large and Maisie Scott-Stuart in the victorious freestyle relay.

The medley team of Davison, Dobbins, Large and Francesca Burrin also came home first.

In the 13 and under age group there were wins in individual swim events for Jessica Hardingham, Miriam Jessett and Joe Taylor. They did have a clean sweep of the relays with the girls'freestyle relay team of Jessett, Hardingham, Kate Waugh and Sarah Brown and the medley squad of Laura Hill, Charlotte Morris, Jesett and Brown taking maximum points. …
