THE manufacturing sector plays a key part of the North East's economy, with a long and proud heritage, which is why we are pleased to be a joint sponsor of the new Ernst & Young Manufacturers' ' League in the region.

The initiative will champion the manufacturing business talent from across the North East, as well as bringing professionals and firms together in order to provide the guidance and support necessary to drive growth and help them explore growth opportunities.

Whether looking to expand their business at home or exploring new overseas markets, it's important for manufacturers to ensure that they have the right banking support in place to underpin their plans.

At Lloyds Bank we have a dedicated North East-based team of manufacturing-focused business managers, who are specifically trained in helping firms in the sector access the support and guidance necessary to plan their growth.

We have worked closely with the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA), Engineering Employers' ' Federation (EEF) and the Warwick Manufacturing Group to develop new training programmes for our manufacturing relationship managers. This will ensure that they are aware of the specific needs of the sector, and are able to help manufacturers to achieve their ambitions and meet the challenges ahead.

Businesses should undertake clear assessments on what the financial requirements will be as a result of targeting these previously untapped markets. It is a good idea to discuss funding requests with a banking partner well in advance so that they understand what is required and can help firms access the necessary finance.

Looking overseas for growth: Exporting and international trade can provide an effective yet often underused route to growth for UK manufacturers.
