ONE of the few ways to earn more in these difficult times is by taking on more responsibility. However, before you go for that promotion, read this.

Managers last just two years before their happiness and performance at work decreases significantly, according to new research from the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM).

The research reveals that happy managers are better managers overall. When asked to rate their own performance, the top 10 per cent of managers were also the happiest, with a happiness rating of 86 out of 100, while the bottom 10 per cent of performers rated themselves as least happy with a rating of 30 out of 100.

So there is a link between training and development and the happiness and performance of both managers and their teams. As managers with clear access to progression and development pathways were shown to be happier and performing at a higher level than those with less access, anyone going for promotion should insist on management training as well as extra pay. …
