THIS remake of the 1966 screwball caper about a cat burglar - Michael Caine - and showgirl who plan an elaborate heist has impeccable credentials. Screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen and leading man Colin Firth, pictured right, all have Oscars, co-star Tom Courtenay was twice shortlisted and director Michael Hoffman guided Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer to nominations for The Last Station.

So what could possibly go wrong? Everything, it seems, because this reworking is an unmitigated mess. Firth loses his trousers for a protracted centrepiece sequence at London's luxurious five-star Savoy hotel but the film loses its way well before then, wheezing and spluttering from one clumsy gag to the next. Mild-mannered art curator Harry Deane (Firth) grows tired of the bullying of wealthy boss Lord Lionel Shabandar (Alan Rickman) so concocts a swindle to teach him a lesson. …
