IT'S only a matter of time before VIKING BLOND picks up a good staying handicap. As a novice last term, he was found wanting in the highest grade but he has time on his side. With the blinkers back on and on the back of a decent run over hurdles, he ran a terrific race at Cheltenham where he was always up with the pace and stuck on willingly in third. Up 2lb for that, he is still on the right side of the handicapper. I was impressed by the way GOULANES answered all the calls to hold off Cross Kennon at Cheltenham. The handicapper has had his say with a 6lb rise but he was the most inexperienced runner in the field and there is more to come over hurdles before he goes chasing.

The only horse still on the bridle with two to jump at Uttoxeter, UBIQUE looked to have the race in his pocket until tiring on the run-in and going down by a neck to Joseph Mercer. …
