I WAS interested in the article about Saltwell Park, Gateshead, in the Evening Chronicle last month.

The first time I went there was at the age of five, in 1936, with my mother and four sisters. I have a lot of memories of my time spent at the park.

On weekends we went there and my mother used to make sandwiches. We used to stay there all day. I loved the paddling pool and the maypole, the banana slide and, best of all, the Pets' Corner. I used to feed the goats and I loved the budgies in the big cages.

I also liked the big house - I could spend hours in there. A few years ago I saw a lovely purple budgie in the cage. My husband went to see one of the workmen at Pets' Corner and asked if he could buy the budgie for me but he was told they weren't for sale.

I thought it would remind me of the park. One day my mother took us there and it started to rain followed by thunder and lightning, so we hid under a tree and it got struck by the lightning. …
