Warning as Numbers of Jobles' All; More Cuts Still to Come

A DROP in the region's unemployment has been welcomed, but there are warnings it could climb again as cuts bite.

Unemployment fell to 129,000 in the three months to August, down 11,000 on the previous quarter, and a fall of 14,000 on the same time last year. But the jobless rate of 9.9% was the highest nationwide, said the Office for National Statistics.

Employment in the region stood at 1.175m, up 19,000 over the quarter and 46,000 year-on-year. But the region's 67.9% employment rate was the lowest in the country.

The figures showed claims for jobseekers' allowance from 18 to 24-year-olds were up 1,000 to 29,600 in September from the previous month, although that was 200 down from September 2011.

The overall jobseekers' claimant count was up by 700 to 94,300 last month, a rise of 4,900 on the year. The Government said that was down to welfare reforms.

Northern TUC regional secretary Kevin Rowan welcomed the drop, but added: "What we know on the ground is that many of these jobs that are being created are low paid and part-time when many people need full-time work. …
