'The Heritage of the Area Is So Special' MYHOME

Article excerpt

Where is your home? I live with my family in Fieldhouse Lane, Durham.

How would you describe it? A 1920s detached house that is a cosy home for us.

How long have you lived there? Nine years.

Who lives there? Me, my wife Dianne and our son, Nicholas, 10. I mustn't forget the two ageing 17-year-old Persian cats and some goldfish.

Why did you move there? We have lived in this area ever since we moved to Durham and really like it. We waited and waited for a house to come up that had a little more space than our previous property and grabbed this lovely home as soon as it came on the market.

What's your favourite room and why? My favourite room is the one we call the piano room because it has a piano in it! One side is lined with bookshelves full of books and papers that I like to browse through. It's a lovely rich room with an old period fireplace in the centre. Perfect for relaxing in.

What are your favourite interior shops or websites? We have a Laura Ashley nearby and like that a lot. We have on occasion used S websites like Homes and Gardens to find inspiration for the house. There's also a lovely little shop in Durham called City Attic we visit for gifts and suchlike. I should give Waterstones in Durham a mention because I'm doing a book signing there on Saturday, November 3 from 11am.

What's the best thing about living where you do? By far and away the best thing about living in Durham is being close to everything. We are able to walk into the city for a meal or drink and can get to Nicholas's school very easily. It's the perfectsized place, not too big and not too small. It's wonderful to be able to walk along the river and the heritage of the area is just so special. I used the history of the city extensively in my new book.

What are your favourite shops, restaurants and bars? In terms of restaurants we like Italian because it's the perfect family meal so we go to Bella Italia and Ask. But when we can get a babysitter we like to go to The Spice Cafe and The Capital. …
