Paralysis Won't Stop Mel from Reaching His Goal

A FORMER rugby player was left paralysed after he fell on to his spine from just three feet in the air.

The last time Mel Nuru moved his body, he was hanging upside down from a metal bar rigged up to a door frame at his Gateshead home.

He was attempting to relieve chronic back pain after a rough tackle put his career with Gateshead Fell RFC on hold in 2007.

But as the thick-set 39-year-old moved to dismount, the pole cracked and he fell around a metre to land on the back of his neck. Unable to move and flickering in and out of consciousness, it was more than an hour before Mel's partner, careers adviser Isobel McQueen, returned home.

"It happened in a split second and I knew I had hurt myself and I was thinking I would be out of work for another two weeks," said Mel, who had found work as a plasterer before the accident in July last year. …
